The Lubricants (re-posted with review) No. 1

lubricantssingleLubricants / “Activated Energy” : Relative Records 007, 1980, reissued early 2000s

With muddy, mid-paced ferocity, this band channels the Avengers as well as echoes the tuneful templates of Orange County, CA (think Adolescents/Agent Orange) legions, though honed through a tough-skinned, winter-hardened Milwaukee telescope, replete with cynicism and working class wits. Side two leans towards hooky and new wave traits, including a spiraling drum disaster emboldened with bass line torn from the likes of Peter Hook (New Order) huffing spray cans. “We’re going to get the fuck out of here…” they yelp, leading down a path of sonic shaping that would later seem to form the aesthetic exoskeleton of fellow Midwest brawlers like the Effigies.
